Full Definition

Open enrollment is the annual window — typically 2–4 weeks — during which employees can enroll in, change, or waive employer-sponsored benefits for the upcoming plan year. Outside of open enrollment, changes are generally only permitted following a qualifying life event. Effective open enrollment communication and decision support tools significantly affect employee benefit utilization and satisfaction.
