Full Definition

A renewal strategy is the employer's systematic approach to evaluating an annual health plan renewal — analyzing the proposed rate increase, benchmarking it against market trends, identifying alternatives (self-funding, level-funding, carrier change, plan design modifications), and negotiating with the incumbent carrier or issuing an RFP. A proactive renewal strategy, begun 6–9 months before renewal, consistently produces better outcomes than reactive acceptance of the carrier's initial offer.
