Full Definition

The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act (MHPAEA) requires that financial requirements and treatment limitations for mental health and substance use disorder benefits be no more restrictive than those for medical and surgical benefits. The 2024 final rule significantly expanded parity requirements, including a new requirement for employers to conduct and document comparative analyses of non-quantitative treatment limitations (NQTLs).
