The DPP for Weight Management
The CDC-recognized Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) is the gold standard for weight management in pre-diabetic employees. The DPP produces 5–7% weight loss on average — enough to significantly reduce diabetes risk and improve cardiovascular health. The DPP is available through multiple vendors and is covered by Medicare and many commercial plans.
Bariatric Surgery Coverage
IQ Insight
Bariatric surgery is the most effective weight loss intervention for severely obese employees — producing 25–35% weight loss and resolving or significantly improving diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea in most patients. Despite its effectiveness, many employer plans do not cover bariatric surgery. Employers who cover bariatric surgery with appropriate clinical criteria typically see positive ROI within 2–3 years through reduced comorbidity costs.
