RSI Cost Burden
Repetitive strain injuries — carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, back strain, and other musculoskeletal conditions caused by repetitive motion, awkward postures, or forceful exertions — are the most common workplace injury. They account for 30–40% of all workers' comp claims and generate $20 billion in annual workers' comp costs.
Ergonomic Risk Factors
| Risk Factor | Examples | Intervention |
|---|---|---|
| Repetitive motion | Assembly line work, data entry, scanning | Job rotation, automation, tool redesign |
| Awkward postures | Overhead work, bent wrists, twisted trunk | Workstation adjustment, tool redesign |
| Forceful exertions | Heavy lifting, pushing, pulling | Mechanical assists, team lifting, weight limits |
| Contact stress | Resting wrists on hard edges, gripping tools | Padding, tool redesign, gloves |
| Vibration | Power tools, vehicles | Anti-vibration tools, vibration-dampening seats |
Early Symptom Reporting
IQ Insight
Early symptom reporting programs — encouraging employees to report early signs of RSI (tingling, numbness, aching) before they become serious injuries — are one of the most cost-effective ergonomics interventions. An employee who reports early symptoms can receive conservative treatment (stretching, workstation modification, temporary duty change) that prevents a serious injury. An employee who waits until the injury is severe may require surgery and months of disability.
