PGx Program Design
- Testing method: Cheek swab — simple, non-invasive, done once in a lifetime
- Result delivery: Results delivered to member and prescribing physician
- EHR integration: Results integrated with electronic health records for future prescribing
- Clinical decision support: Alerts when a prescribed drug conflicts with the member's genetic profile
- Member education: Education about PGx and how to use results with their physician
- Ongoing value: Results are used for all future prescribing — not just the initial test
Target Population
PGx testing delivers the most value for members who are: (1) starting a new medication for a condition with multiple drug options; (2) experiencing adverse drug reactions; (3) not responding to current medications; or (4) taking multiple medications with potential interactions. Targeting testing to these high-value populations maximizes ROI.
Member Engagement
Pro Tip
Member engagement for PGx testing requires education about the value of genetic testing. Many members are skeptical of genetic testing or concerned about privacy. Address these concerns proactively: explain that PGx testing is used only for medication optimization, not for employment or insurance decisions; explain GINA protections; and share stories of members who avoided adverse drug events through PGx testing.
