HDHP/HSA as Consumerism Vehicle
HDHP/HSA plans are the primary vehicle for healthcare consumerism. When employees have skin in the game — paying the first $1,500–$3,000 of their healthcare costs — they are more likely to shop for value. Employers who pair HDHP/HSA plans with price transparency tools, care navigation, and HSA education see lower utilization and better care decisions.
The Consumerism Limit
IQ Insight
Healthcare consumerism has limits. Employees in a medical crisis cannot shop for value — they need care immediately. Consumerism is most effective for elective, shoppable services (imaging, lab tests, elective procedures) and for chronic disease management (medication adherence, preventive care). Design consumerism programs that focus on shoppable services and chronic disease management — not emergency care.
