Aggregate Stop-Loss Mechanics
Aggregate stop-loss protects against total plan claims exceeding a threshold — the aggregate attachment point. If total claims exceed the attachment point, the stop-loss carrier pays the excess. The attachment point is typically set at 115–125% of expected claims. For a plan with $5 million in expected claims, the aggregate attachment point would be $5.75–$6.25 million.
The Corridor
The corridor is the gap between the specific attachment point and the aggregate attachment point. Claims above the specific attachment point are paid by the specific stop-loss carrier — but they also count toward the aggregate attachment point. The corridor determines how much specific stop-loss activity is needed before aggregate stop-loss triggers.
Accommodation Aggregate
IQ Insight
Accommodation aggregate is a stop-loss feature that reduces the aggregate attachment point when specific claims are high. If the plan has multiple large specific claims, the accommodation aggregate lowers the threshold at which aggregate stop-loss triggers — providing additional protection in catastrophic years. Accommodation aggregate is a valuable feature for plans with high specific claim exposure.
